New Delhi: Oil companies are pushing the govt for a Rs1.82/ltr hike in the price of petrol citing increase in crude oil prices and fall in the value of the Indian Rupee.
State-owned oil companies Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum last hiked petrol prices by Rs 3.14 a litre on September 16 when the rupee was ruling at about 48 to a US dollar. The local currency has depreciated further and is now trading at over 49 against the American unit. The govt has not yet decided weather it will go ahead with the increase or not but the BJP has already started pointing fingers.
Senior BJP leader Mr L.K.Advani who is currently roaming around the country aimlessly, after the RSS decided he was not PM material, has blamed the UPA for the expected hike. " It is a UPA conspiracy to end my Rath Yatra. They have no other means to stop me and are now using unfair tactics. Isnt it ironic that they talk about it on the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi? She could not defend herself so called for Emergency to be declared. Today they cant stop me so they are planing to increase the petrol price so that i cant go any further. This is unacceptable. The common man needs the Yatra. This Yatra is against corruption. Congress is all for corruption so they dont want my Yatra to succeed and rid the country of the evil." said Mr Advani when asked how the price rise was going to affect his Yatra plans. He further added that such tactics would not derail his Yatra which he said was for the good of the common man.
Meanwhile, as reported earlier, still on his Maun Vrat, Mr Digvijay Singh could not blame the RSS for the expected rise in petrol prices while Dr Manmohan Singh, although not on Maun Vrat, decided not to speak on the topic at all.
